Albrechtsberger was organist at Melk before settling in Vienna in 1765 where he was employed as Court Organist. In 1791 he succeeded Mozart as assistant Kapellmeister at St Stephen’s Cathedral and became Kapellmeister two years later. A renowned teacher and theorist, he numbered among his counterpoint students Beethoven, Hummel and Moscheles. It is hoped that his excellently crafted works for string quartet such as his Op. 16 (1798) will now find a fully deserved permanent place in concert programmes. Here, Pal Nemeth conducts Members of the Savaria Baroque Orchestra on period instruments, with Andrea Nigh on harp.
